“Pamigį pabudo” the ritual of traditional Advent songs and contemporary music

Pamigį pabudoIn Lithuanian and Indo-European mythology, Advent is understood as a transformative, tension-filled, chaotic renewal of the cycle of nature and human life. The wheel of the year comes to a brief halt and begins to turn anew with great force. The ritual of traditional and contemporary music “Pamigį pabudo” on 17 December at 6 pm invites you to experience this extraordinary transformation.

The musical composition “Pamigį pabudo” by composer Mantvydas Leonas Pranulis is an attempt to actualise Lithuanian folklore by dressing authentically performed traditional songs in the garb of contemporary music. It is an invitation to reflect on the events and experiences of the past year through a musical experience, and to enter a new phase.

The ritualistic nature of the piece lies in the very order of the concert. Surrounded by the synergy of ancient and contemporary music, the audience will experience the transformation of Advent - the meeting of the past and the new year, darkness and light, death and life. Initially immersed in the gloomy melodies of a deep winter sleep, they will then be swept up in a blizzard of chaotic and destabilising arrangements, which will dissipate into harmony and usher in a new beginning, illuminated by radiant harmonies.

The composer's idea is fulfilled by nine strong and very different musicians who have distinguished themselves on the jazz, contemporary and ethnomusic scenes. Traditional Advent songs are performed by folk singers with a special feeling for old songs and a mastery of performance. During the concert, they will try not to succumb to the dictates of modern, compositional music and to retain the authentic feeling of the song.

The ritual features contemporary music and folk performers:

Dominykas Snarskis (drums, percussion)
Mindaugas Stumbras (oud, guitar)
Kazimieras Jušinskas (saxophones, flute)
Darius Bagdonavičius (violin, Jew's harp)
Julija Ivanovaitė (violin)
Gediminas Stepanavičius (double bass)
Lukas Budzinauskas (percussion)
Arnas Kmieliauskas (cello)

Greta Gražulytė (vocals)
Martynas Mockevičius (vocals)
Julija Vilkaitė (vocals)
Jogailė Jurkutė (vocals)

The concert will take place in Vilnius Lukiškės Prison, St. Nicholas Orthodox Church (Lukiškių alley 6).

The event will be photographed and filmed, and the captured images will be made public.
