Spindles of Time. Autumn Equinox and Baltic Unity Day
Let’s mark the autumn equinox, a celebration during which the deities have traditionally been thanked for the harvest and a dark period of the year is welcomed, bringing man closer to the afterlife, calling him to look up to his spiritual life and the wisdom of his ancestors.
This year, in commemoration of the Year of Folk Art, a spindle motif was chosen to give meaning to the ceremonial moments of the Equinox. The patterns of the spinning tool, which was mainly used during the winter, representing elements of nature, celestial bodies, symbols of the World Tree, tell about Lithuanians’ close connection with nature, their worldview and beliefs. The images of fire and light, accompanied by musical compositions, will remind the person, who is twisted into the spindles of time and constantly in a hurry, of eternal values, the ideas of a rotating circle of the year and constant renewal.
Together with the intersection of light and dark periods, we will celebrate the Baltic Unity Day. In honor of the communion of the three Baltic nations, the event will be accomplished by the floating sculpture of the Tree of Life created especially for this occasion.
Astronomical autumn will be greeted with fire and music rites on September 22 at 8 p. m. on the Neris embankment near the King Mindaugas Bridge.
The event is organized by Vilnius Ethnic Culture Center and Vilnius City Municipality.
The project is funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture.
