Spring Equinox 2021

1500x1000px lygiadienis pavasario

On March 20-21, we celebrate the Spring Equinox, when the duration of day and night is equal throughout the planet, and after March 21, the day becomes longer than the night.

Every year in Vilnius, we commemorate this celebration with enchanting installations of fire and light, live performances, and musical compositions, thus marking the struggle between the dark and light forces of nature. This year, you will be able to see all this virtually, on March 20 at 7 p. m. on a Facebook event.

From March 17 to April 7, we invite you to see the sculptures of Easter palms, called verba in Lithuanian, created for this celebration, which will stand in the Šventaragis Valley, next to the Lithuanian National Museum. This year, verba was chosen as the symbol of the Spring Equinox, which is not only an important attribute of the spring rites but also symbolizes the tree of life.

It was once believed that verba made of juniper or goat willow protects a person from thunder, fires, bad eyes, diseases, and at the same time it is a symbol of the beginning of spring. Later, verba got not only a ceremonial but also a decorative purpose but retained three main parts of the tree of life, symbolizing the universe zones: the stem of verba denotes the underworld, the middle (ornamented) part means the world of humanity, fauna, and flora, and the reed brooms tied at the top symbolize the realm of heaven and gods.

These sculptures will delight passers-by during the Spring Equinox, Palm Sunday, and Easter.

The author of the sculptures is Rytas Jonas Belevičius.
